For centuries, men and women have asked themselves the existential question, “What am I doing here?” It is human nature to long for the reason for our existence, our purpose for being on this earth, and a focus we can channel our minds and actions to that makes us feel we are making a difference in the world.
An article from Forbes written by best-selling life coach, Margie Warrell, explains that channeling your focus each day by placing your passions and purpose in the front of your conscious can help you live a more purposeful life. “Diffused light has little use, but when its energy is concentrated—as through a magnifying glass—that same light can set fire to paper.”
The first step towards focusing on your purpose is to gain insight into yourself. Begin each and every day by asking yourself these soul-reaching questions:
What am I Passionate About?
Most often, your purpose is tied directly to your passion. Consider what it is that makes you get up in the morning. Write down in a journal what makes you happy and what you absolutely love to do. Then ask yourself if you are living a life that is faithful to your passion.
What Kind of Person do I Want to be?
Take some time every day to consider how you want to be known in the world, in your community, and in the minds of others. Think about the role models in your life. Yours could be your mother, your aunt, or a successful person you’ve never met who has accomplished goals similar to yours. Start by jotting down what makes them so influential to you, what it is about their character that makes them so impressionable. Envision your role models, and then envision what you might need to adjust about yourself or your lifestyle to be more in tune to your true values.
What do I Want my Future to Look Like?
Start by assessing where you live geographically and ask yourself whether it suits your personality and future goals. Next, think about your career and social circle and whether those parts of your life are complimentary to the future you see for yourself. Consider your answer to this question when evaluating all aspects of your life; Your ideal future doesn’t happen overnight–you need to prepare for it and adjust, tweak, and rearrange your life as needed.
What am I Willing to Fight for?
What is it that you would put yourself through tough times, stress, and even sadness to accomplish? To live a life of purpose and to achieve self-fulfillment, such bliss and purity often come with trial and error, struggle, pain and failure. What will you give up on, and what will you keep getting back up for?
How do I Want to Measure my Life?
Take a few moments each day and think about what you consider to be most important in life. Ask yourself how you want to measure your life and take a stand for that purpose. One exercise you can do is to pretend that you were just told you were going to die in one year’s time. What would you do differently than you are now? What steps would you begin taking to die feeling fulfilled and that you lived true to your purpose? If you try your best to live each day parallel to that plan and purpose, you will naturally experience happiness, peace, and a sense of accomplishment.
Realizing you have what it takes to be the person you want to be and to create the life of your dreams, is the first step towards living with purpose. Start each day by asking yourself these questions and nourish the power you have inside.
